Volusia County Branch Jail Overview

The Volusia County Branch Jail is run by the Volusia County Division of Corrections. The two-building county jail system carried a total design capacity of 1,722 in 2024.

Capacity is not the same as the daily count. The countywide average daily population, the average number of people in custody across both jail buildings on a given day, was 1,345 in 2024. The same report says 18,788 people were processed through ID and Receiving that year, with most released within a few days of intake.

Visiting Someone at the Volusia County Branch Jail

The Branch Jail provides no contact visits. All on-site visitation is by video, and it takes place at the Video Visitation Center at 1300A Red John Drive, next to the jail. Visits are run by the vendor ICSolutions, and you schedule them by appointment in advance. To book a session you need the inmate's six-digit booking number, which you can find on the roster profile. Photo identification is required, and you must check in 10 minutes before your session because late arrivals are turned away after the visit starts.

Sessions run Tuesday through Saturday in fixed 30-minute windows. For the first 72 hours after booking, visits are restricted unless an Operations Supervisor approves them, so a brand-new arrival may not be visitable right away. Mail, Phone, and Money at the Volusia County Branch Jail

Regular mail does not go straight to the jail. The county routes ordinary letters through a central scanning vendor, which delivers them to inmate tablets. Legal mail and money orders, by contrast, go to the Corrections address on Indian Lake Road. Always write the inmate's full name and booking number on the envelope, or the mail may be returned. Booking and Intake at the Volusia County Branch Jail

Everyone who enters the county jail system is processed through ID and Receiving at the Branch Jail. The flow runs from arrest, to ID and Receiving, to First Appearance, and then to classification and housing. Officers processed 18,788 people through ID and Receiving in 2024. Staff collect property, take identification, and run a medical and mental-health screening. Many people are released soon after, through bond or pretrial release, before they ever reach a housing unit.

Within about one day of admission, an inmate appears before a judge for First Appearance, held in the Branch Jail itself. The judge reads the charges, decides probable cause, and may set, raise, or lower bond. First Appearance is at 1:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays. After the hearing, a case counselor classifies the inmate, which is the jail's process of setting a custody level and housing assignment based on charges, history, and behavior. Bond can be posted at the Branch Jail, where the Booking Office stays open 24/7.

Release takes time. Once paperwork starts, processing can run 2 to 4 hours. Effective April 29, 2024, the jail does not release anyone between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless a responsible party is on site to drive them off the property and checks in with Control.
